Some state legislators want to change the way the Pennsylvania State Police are funded and free up money for an aging infrastructure. Money for the state police comes from the motor license fund, which is part of the state Department of Transportation budget.

The state police receive about $550 million a year from the motor license fund into which Pennsylvania drivers pay when renewing their licenses and registering their vehicles. The money is earmarked for transportation, but since the law establishing the fund allows it to be spent for “safety,” McCall said the money has been used for the police.

Under the legislators’ proposal, the police funding will be transferred in increments of $50 million annually for ten years. Since the general fund increases each year according to the economy, that growth would cover the transfer without jeopardizing state police funding, McCall said. If the economy sours and the general fund growth is insufficient, the transfer will be suspended for a year.

Pennsylvania State Police spokesman Jack Lewis, based in Harrisburg, said state police officially have no position on the proposed legislation.
Argall said troopers have expressed concern about still having the money they need.
Argall and McCall assure they will.
