Hundreds of miles away the federal government wants more control over you local and state police department. They don’t live in your community and aren’t concerned with the results – it’s all about control and power. If they were, Gupta would never have been nominated and confirmed.
While Gupta knows little to nothing of actual policing in crime ridden neighborhoods, she no doubt is an expert in determining who is a “mostly peaceful” rioter expressing their 1st Amendment rights and a dangerous “insurrectionist” who is a grave threat to our democratic republic. The federal government and she is intent on training your police department to clearly distinguish between the two.

As head of the civil rights division during the Obama administration, Gupta oversaw the use of “pattern-or-practice” investigations of police departments alleged to engage in frequent abuses.

Senate confirms Vanita Gupta for No. 3 spot at Justice Department in narrow vote Gupta said she does not support defunding the police despite testifying in favor of cutting police budgets in 2020.

Gupta was confirmed by a vote of 51 to 49, with only one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, breaking ranks to join Democrats in approving her nomination.
Prior to The Leadership Conference, Gupta led [Obama’s] Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where she oversaw efforts to address systemic constitutional violations by law enforcement agencies through pattern or practice investigations and the enforcement of consent decrees.
About 400 organizations led by the Leadership Conference urged Congress to approve a set of reforms “to swiftly rectify the legacy of white supremacy and anti-black racism that has led to police violence against Black people across our country.”

Jun 2, 2020 – “The consent decrees are not perfect because there is no perfect mechanism for the kind of change that’s required,” said Gupta. “But they’re the best thing that exists.”
Former attorney general Jeff Sessions argued the decrees can take “decisions, and the accountability for them, away from the people’s elected representatives.”
“I think the Trump administration and his Justice Department have completely gutted the police reform effort,” said Vanita Gupta, an acting assistant attorney general for civil rights during the Obama administration and currently president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
Under former president Barack Obama, Justice’s Civil Rights Division opened 25 investigations into law enforcement agencies and enforced 19 agreements, including 14 consent decrees and similar directives.
In the wake of the turmoil engulfing the nation, about 400 organizations led by the Leadership Conference urged Congress to approve a set of reforms “to swiftly rectify the legacy of white supremacy and anti-black racism that has led to police violence against Black people across our country.”
“The consent decrees are not perfect because there is no perfect mechanism for the kind of change that’s required,” said Gupta. “But they’re the best thing that exists.”
These court orders are designed to change not just policies, but also entrenched cultures that lead to police abuse. Noting the saying that “culture eats policy for lunch,” Gupta said the decrees seek to have police officers embrace values against racially discriminatory policing, against tolerating misconduct and in favor of community-based policing.
Baltimore is trying to do that.
