• Several cars spun donuts in the middle of an intersection in Philadelphia just before midnight on Sunday, stopping traffic in both directions
• Some onlookers set off fireworks as the cars, one of them a high-powered Dodge Charger, passed by
• Police were on the scene, according to footage taken from the scene, but the crowd remained for several more stunts
• One man even performed donuts around the cop car, before a group of the onlookers hopped onto the car and started dancing
• Eventually, police were able to clear up the area 
• Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, which comes amid rising crime in the City of Brotherly Love

Ed Mullins, the firebrand president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, has resigned from the role, the union said.

The FBI raided the SBA headquarters in Lower Manhattan as well as Mullins’ home in Port Washington, Long Island, on Tuesday morning. A letter from the SBA executive board acknowledged that “President Mullins is apparently the target of the federal investigation” and “[g]iven the severity of this matter and the uncertainty of its outcome,” they asked him to resign from his position.

By effectively criminalizing dissent, this President, this FBI, and this Department of Justice are deliberately undermining one of the key pillars of our democratic republic – “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” That is language enshrined in the First Amendment to our Constitution. When the U.S. House passed the USA PATRIOT Act in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, privacy watchdogs, including myself, negotiated for a sunset clause to many of its provisions. We knew that as important as these powers were to quickly address the new threat of global terrorism, the longer they remained on the books the more likely they would be abused for non-terrorism purposes. 

We were correct in our concern, but at the time none of us foresaw that such powerful tools would be used to thwart dissent at local PTA meetings. We now know otherwise.

Just last week, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to President Biden calling for a “joint collaboration among federal law enforcement agencies, state and local law enforcement,” to “examine appropriate enforceable actions against these crimes and acts of violence.”
