Sam Brinton goes by the name Sister Ray Dee O’Active while participating in a group called the Order of Perpetual Indulgence – a non-profit group who dress up as nuns to raise awareness of sexual intolerance and transphobia. Brinton, 34, lives in Rockville, Maryland, with their husband Kevin. Last month, they proudly announced on LinkedIn that they had accepted the job of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy for the Department of Energy. The White House is yet to confirm their appointment to the role. Brinton said they were the first ‘gender fluid’ person to accept a role in federal government leadership. Brinton’s past is a colorful one. Born in the 1987, their parents Peggy Jo and Stephen Brinton are Southern Baptists who belong now to the First Baptist Church of Perry, Iowa. The couple have three children – Sam, Rachel and Daniel.
A spokesperson for the Department of Energy told the Washington Examiner on Monday that Brinton is currently under consideration for a career position, not a political appointment. The spokesperson declined to provide further details.
