Local man convicted of charges related to January 6 insurrection takes own life
July 25, 2022 – Lycoming County coroner Charles Kiessling, Jr. confirmed that Aungst died July 20 by suicide. Aungst pleaded guilty in June to one count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building. The charge is a misdemeanor. Aungst was facing up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Matthew Perna, who pleaded guilty in December to four charges related to the attempted insurrection, killed himself at home Friday.
“The constant delays in hearings, and postponements dragged out for over a year. Because of this, Matt’s heart broke and his spirit died,” says his obituary in the Herald, a local newspaper in Sharon, Pa.
“Matt did not have a hateful bone in his body. He embraced people of all races, income brackets and beliefs, never once berating anyone for having different views,” the obit added.
US District Judge Trevor McFadden… ignored the recommendation from federal prosecutors and sentenced a Texas florist to pay a $5,000 fine and serve two months probation for entering the Capitol on January 6.
